Perched at about 7,500 feet in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Spruces Campground is a large, well-equipped site within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest roughly a short drive up the canyon from Salt Lake City via Wasatch Boulevard and Highway 190. The campground contains a total of 96 campsites: 85 sites configured for both RVs and tents, 5 RV-only sites, 2 tent-only sites and 4 glamping sites. All campsites come with picnic tables, campfire rings and grills; the loop roads, parking areas and individual parking stalls are paved and walkways are concrete or paved, so RVs and tow vehicles are easily accommodated. Flush toilets and drinking water are available on site, and a host sells firewood; there are also communal recreation features inside the campground including a baseball field, volleyball court and horseshoe pits. Typical overnight fees follow the posted schedule (cash, check, or Scan & Pay): single sites $31, double sites $63, triple sites $88, and glamping sites $111 (glamping requires a deposit). Day-use parking for trail access is $10 and extra vehicles are $10 apiece. Group and day-use rates vary by site and capacity for example, two overnight group sites run $235 (capacity 50), while day-use group sites range from $168 up to $339 depending on pavilion and capacity so check the specific site when booking. Spruces puts you close to a classic range of canyon recreation: hiking and mountain biking on numerous trails (the Donut Falls Trailhead is nearby at Jordan Pines), fly-fishing on Big Cottonwood Creek, and rock climbing on the canyon's granite walls. Solitude Mountain Resort is about three miles up-canyon, offering lift-access hiking, dining options and a disc golf course; another mile beyond is Silver Lake, with easy loops, canoeing and small-lake fishing. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov (reservation transactions appear on statements as "Recreation.gov 877-444-6777") or by phone at 1-877-444-6777; for facility-specific questions call (385) 273-1100. Be aware of the campground's reservation policies: a $10 service fee applies to most changes or cancellations, late cancellations (the day before or day of arrival for individual campsites) generally forfeit the first night's fee in addition to any service fee, no-shows can be assessed up to a $20 fee and loss of use fees, and refund requests must be made within 14 days of scheduled departure.
