Liberty Hill sits on the southern shore of Navarro Mills Lake in central Texas, an easy getaway for anglers and weekenders from the Dallas Fort Worth area. The lake is a major draw for fishermen Navarro Mills holds the state record white crappie (4 lbs 9 oz) and Liberty Hill provides immediate water access with a marina, a fishing pier and two multi-lane boat ramps that make launching quick on busy weekends. Angling is varied: healthy populations of channel and yellow catfish patrol the flats, and hefty hybrid stripers are often taken below the dam during water releases. Boating, water sports, hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing are all on the menu, and birdwatchers can expect songbirds, hawks, great blue herons, ducks, geese and the occasional bald eagle. Swimming is allowed at the designated beach from April 1 September 30 for day users and year-round for registered campers; there is no lifeguard on duty, and life jackets are available to borrow from the gatehouse. For access, approach from State Highway 31 into Dawson and follow FM 709 north about 4 miles to the park entrance do not rely on routing across the dam, that road is closed to the public. The campground itself contains TOTAL CAMPSITES: 101, with 95 sites set up for both RVs and tents and 6 tent-only sites, most of which offer electric and water hookups and several of which include sewer hookups; five sites have screened shelters with sinks for extra comfort. On-site amenities include a marina, boat ramps, a fishing pier, a swim beach, playground, group shelter and dump stations, plus a concession site for basics; picnic areas and a small specialized sport site add variety for family outings. In spring the lakeshore fields burst with native wildflowers bluebonnets, paintbrush and others drawing photographers and nature lovers, while the mix of woodlands, grasslands and shoreline supports squirrels, rabbits, foxes, bobcats, white-tailed deer, raccoons and armadillos. Practical details like fees and reservation windows change periodically, so check the park's official page or Corps of Engineers information before you go; the combination of solid boat access, abundant fish, year-round birdlife and a compact campground layout makes Liberty Hill a straightforward base for a fishing trip, a family weekend, or a spring wildflower run.
