High View Park sits out on a long peninsula along the western shore of Bardwell Lake, about two miles southwest of Ennis and within an hour's drive of the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. The setting alternates between open grassy stretches and stands of trees that provide a mix of sun and shade, and the lake's cool blue water is an easy draw on hot Texas afternoons. Wildlife is a regular presence here deer, armadillo, rabbit, squirrel and a variety of birds are commonly seen, and bluebonnets and other wildflowers rim the shoreline each spring. The reservoir itself was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1965 for flood control, and that same agency manages the recreation resources: hunters will find several designated hunting areas around the lake (including duck hunting), and anglers prize Bardwell for bass fishing, steady catfish catches and moderate crappie opportunities. The park's developed side is straightforward and serviceable for both RV and tent campers. High View has 38 campsites in all 32 are intended for RV use and 6 are configured to serve both RVs and tents and many sites offer water plus electric hookups in 30- and 50-amp configurations (50-amp sites carry a $16 fee; 30-amp sites are $14). A public restroom building with showers helps make multi-night stays comfortable, and there are 10 picnic sites plus a reservable group picnic pavilion that holds up to 50 people. Water access is convenient: a full-service marina, a four-lane boat ramp, a courtesy dock and several fishing piers (two enclosed piers are available for a small additional fee) support boating, fishing and other water sports, and a roped swimming area with covered benches provides a place to cool off. If you need up-to-date reservation details, seasonal notices or gate information, check the Bardwell Lake website before you go; note also that failure to checkout by 2:00 p.m. may result in additional fees.
