Waxahachie Creek Park sits on the western shore of Bardwell Lake in the Blackland Prairie of southwestern Ellis County, a short drive roughly a few miles southwest of Ennis and under an hour from the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. The campground occupies the upper reaches of the lake near the mouth of Waxahachie Creek, where cottonwood-lined banks and springtime swaths of bluebonnets frame the water. Wildlife is part of the daily view here: deer, armadillo, rabbits, squirrels and a variety of songbirds are commonly seen, and the lake supports healthy fish populations that attract anglers. Bass fishing is a particular draw, catfish fishing is generally excellent and crappie are present in decent numbers; the lake also has a marina with several fishing piers (two enclosed piers require a small additional fee). For explorers, the Bardwell Lake equestrian and multi-use trail starts at Waxahachie Creek Park and provides over 13 miles of routes for horseback riders, mountain bikers or hikers note that the trail lies within a designated hunting area from September through March, so wear bright colors in season. Practical campground details are straightforward: Waxahachie Creek Park has a total of 42 campsites 33 sites suitable for both RVs and tents, 4 equestrian sites, and 5 tent-only sites plus a day-use area, seven non-electric picnic sites and a reservable group pavilion that holds up to 200 people. Boat access varies: the upper boat ramp is shallow at normal lake levels and isn't recommended for ski boats or larger craft, while the lower ramp handles all types of boats at normal levels and includes a courtesy dock for loading and unloading. Electrical service options are offered (fees are $16 for 50-amp sites and $14 for 30-amp sites) and campers should be aware that failure to check out by 2:00 p.m. may result in additional charges. Besides boating and fishing, the park supports water sports, picnicking, wildlife viewing and a concession-operated recreation site; for reservations, seasonal updates and any specific site amenities, consult the Bardwell Lake website before you go.
