Hearts Content Recreation Area sits about 15 miles southwest of Warren on State Route 2002, with the campground on the west side of the road and the Hearts Content Scenic Area and picnic facilities directly across. The scenic area preserves remnants of a 300 400 year-old stand of white pine, hemlock and beech, and an interpretive Old Growth Trail of roughly one mile leads through that timber; day-use facilities there pavilions, accessible toilets and interpretive materials are universally accessible. The campground borders the Hickory Creek Wilderness to the south, whose trailhead is roughly a quarter mile north of the campground entrance and gives access to an 8,633 acre, second-growth area managed for natural processes; a sparsely marked, roughly 13-mile loop traverses the plateau and is intended for experienced, self-reliant hikers (no motorized or mechanical transport allowed). For winter use, a 6.4-mile cross-country ski trail network makes use of old railroad grades and connects through the campground via the Wheeler Loop (trails are marked with blue diamonds), and there's a permanently marked, self-guided orienteering course beginning in the scenic area. The campground itself has a semi-primitive, family-oriented feel: there are 27 sites in total 25 sites set up for both RVs and tents and two tent-only sites and two of the sites include lean-to shelters. Every site comes with a picnic table, a fire ring and a tent pad or RV spur; vault toilets and pressurized water are available on site and a dump station sits at the exit. Near the entrance is a large open field and an amphitheater useful for group activities, while a second open field at the back of the loop is laid out for group camping and also doubles as a helispot. The campground is operated under a concession permit by Allegheny Site Management; sites may be reserved in advance or are available first-come, first-served, and all cancellations or changes must be made through Recreation.gov. For facility-specific questions call (814) 363-9090, and check Recreation.gov for current fees, seasonal openings and other details before you go.
