Buckaloons Campground sits where the Allegheny River meets Brokenstraw Creek and Irvine Run in northwestern Pennsylvania, a low-lying river corridor ringed by mixed hardwoods and scattered old apple trees. The river here is part of the Allegheny Wild & Scenic River system the downstream start of a nearly 50-mile protected segment that threads past a string of islands (including the Allegheny Islands Wilderness) and a number of public boat launches so paddling and floating are major draws: the one-lane concrete boat ramp at Buckaloons gives quick access to calm, family-friendly water with little to no whitewater. Birdlife and riverine species are easy to spot from shore and short trails blue and green herons, bald eagles, egrets and a variety of songbirds and the river supports walleye, trout and bass; freshwater mussels are abundant here, an indicator of good water quality. If you want to stretch legs off the water, the Seneca Interpretive Trail runs through the campground and the Anders Run Natural Area is nearby for more wooded hiking. Hunting, trapping and fishing are allowed in surrounding lands subject to Pennsylvania Game Commission and Fish & Boat Commission rules, so check seasons and regulations before you go. The recreation area has 90 campsites in all: 89 sites configured to accept both RVs and tents, plus one tent-only site; the property also includes a single group tent site (GRP: 1) and 31 sites identified as management sites. Site infrastructure is straightforward and camper-friendly electric hookups at sites, pressurized water, both flush and vault toilets, hot showers and a dump station and hardened footpaths lead down to favored fishing spots on the Allegheny, Brokenstraw and Irvine Run. Onland amenities include a picnic area with tables and charcoal grills, a pavilion, a playground and a basketball court. Reservations and fee details are handled through Recreation.gov (cancellations must be made there as well); for facility-specific questions call (814) 363-9090. You'll find Buckaloons accessible from PA-62 north of Tidioute via National Forge Road or from PA-6, and it serves as a good base for the Allegheny National Forest's broad range of pursuits boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, biking, auto touring, camping with RVs, and more so plan accordingly for seasonal conditions and any commission rules that apply.
