Canal Creek is a compact, low-key group campground set along Canal Creek about 11 miles east of Waldport on State Route 34, then a short drive up Forest Service Road 3462. The facility actually comprises two group sites divided by the creek: the larger Canal Creek Group Site has a broad, grassy field with a picnic shelter, tables and a central campfire circle and can hold up to 100 people and 20 vehicles (RVs are not recommended there); the smaller Alsea Group Site wraps around a central dining area with individual campsites, a campfire circle and room for about 50 people and 10 vehicles, and it does welcome RVs. Both sites have vault toilets but no drinking water or electrical hookups, and one approach requires fording the gentle creek to gain access conditions can vary, so plan accordingly. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 2 both are listed as Both RV Sites & Tent Sites. The creek is more than a roadside feature: Canal Creek supports cutthroat trout and offers places for wading, tubing and informal crawfishing, while the open field at the Canal Creek site is large enough for soccer, Frisbee or pickup football games (bring your own equipment). Towering Douglas firs and spruce shade the campsites, with huckleberry patches on the forest floor and the occasional Roosevelt elk or bald eagle visible in the trees. Beyond the campground, Siuslaw National Forest spreads from coastal mountains to dunes and beaches, so you can combine this stay with beach time near Waldport (about 20 minutes away), the Cape Perpetua scenic area a little farther south, or hikes on Mary's Peak. For practical matters like fees, reservations and seasonal access, contact the Siuslaw National Forest or recreation.gov before you go the forest also supports a wide range of activities including biking, boating, fishing, horseback riding, OHV use, interpretive programs and wildlife viewing.
