“Small campground nicely maintained with a camp host on site. Campsites nicely spaced out, nice loop to walk and river noise drowns the traffic noise passing by. Close to get ice or pizza! Close to trails. We go every year! ”
“Fantastic campground in a convenient location. If you get a spot along the river, you can barely hear the cars. It is so peaceful and beautiful. Very friendly camp host as well. Wish I could have stayed longer!”

Tollgate Campground sits on the north bank of the Zigzag River, about 32 miles southeast of Portland on Highway 26, at roughly 2,100 feet elevation. The campground is threaded with Douglas-fir and cedar in a humid, semi-subtropic pocket of Mt. Hood National Forest, and its setting reflects layers of regional history: the Civilian Conservation Corps built much of the site and you can still see original rock fireplaces and a reconstructed picnic shelter, while a replica of the Barlow Road tollgate stands just east of camp where Oregon Trail travelers once passed. Trails are a primary draw the nearly 10-mile Pioneer Bridle Trail runs through the campground so hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders have direct access from camp; anglers can reach the Zigzag River and nearby Camp Creek for catch-and-release fishing for small trout and whitefish; and a day-use picnic area opens onto the river and surrounding forest for easy outdoor meals and wildlife viewing. The small community of Zigzag is about 2.5 miles away with basic services, and the campground's convenience to Portland makes it a practical base for exploring Mt. Hood's broader recreation opportunities. The campground is compact there are 13 total single-family sites, 4 of which are designated for both RVs and tents and 9 of which are tent sites only and each site includes a table and a campfire ring with a grill. Parking surfaces are dirt and gravel and can be uneven, so larger rigs should plan accordingly; accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided on site. An adjacent picnic shelter that seats up to 30 people (and allows up to 10 vehicles) can be reserved for day use and includes multiple tables and pedestal grills. Because the site is small and rustic, campers should check current Forest Service information for seasonal openings, reservation procedures and any fees before arriving. Beyond the campground itself, Mt. Hood National Forest offers a wide range of activities from winter sports and climbing to boating and interpretive programs making Tollgate a practical, historically interesting jumping-off point for varied outdoor days.
