Lost Creek Campground sits at about 2,600 feet in the Old Maid Flat area of Mt. Hood National Forest, where a carpet of moss and low shrubbery gives way to towering evergreen canopy. The site occupies part of one of Mt. Hood's large pyroclastic mudflows from the "Old Maid" eruption in the 1700s, a piece of geology the accessible Lost Creek Nature Trail interprets with short, paved segments and signage. The campground is fully accessible campsites, fishing access and the paved nature trail are designed for visitors with mobility needs and the facility mix includes single, double and walk-to sites that can each accommodate up to six people. There are 14 campsites in all: nine sites that accept both RVs and tents and five tent-only sites. Picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided; there are no utility hookups, so RV campers should plan accordingly and visitors must bring their own bedding. Firewood can be purchased from the campground host, and campsites are arranged to give a good measure of privacy between individual and group areas. Recreation clusters around the Sandy River and nearby trails. A short drive from the campground (and reachable via a spur off Forest Road 1825) is the Ramona Falls Trailhead; the popular 7.1-mile hike follows the Sandy River to a series of cascading falls. Anglers fish the Sandy River for steelhead year-round, Coho salmon in the fall, Chinook salmon from February through October, and resident trout. Scenic drives, picnicking and wildlife viewing are common day activities, and Mt. Hood and the year-round ski and recreation services of Government Camp sit within easy day-trip distance. The campground is accessed from US-26 east of Portland past Sandy to the Zigzag area and north onto Lolo Pass Road (Forest Road 18), then a short stretch on Forest Road 1825 that crosses the Sandy River so it's convenient for both local day hikers and visitors coming from the metro area. Fee, reservation and seasonal-opening details can change, so check the Forest Service's current information before you go.
