Log Gulch Campground sits on the shore of Holter Lake in west-central Montana, along the Missouri River roughly midway between Helena (about 45 miles to the south) and Great Falls (about 60 miles to the north). The campground occupies shrub-steppe terrain with pockets of ponderosa pine, poplar, and green ash that give most sites some summer shade and frame open views of the surrounding sparsely wooded hills and the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area across the water. Water is the organizing feature here: a large concrete boat launch and courtesy dock put you onto Holter Lake and the Missouri River corridor, with Gates of the Mountains Historic Site reachable by watercraft. Anglers, skiers, and boaters will find easy access to fishing and water-skiing opportunities, while upland hunters, birders, photographers, and hikers can use the nearby public-lands access points and trails; the area also ties into broader Lewis and Clark-related sites and other regional attractions such as the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Giant Springs near Great Falls. The campground is entirely reservation-only and contains 75 campsites in a mix of configurations 52 sites suitable for both RVs and tents, 12 RV-only sites, and 11 tent-only sites arranged across five loops (Loop A: 35 sites; Loop B: 13 sites; Beach: 4 sites; Little Log Gulch: 10 sites; Sardine Row: 13 sites). Most sites have spacious gravel pads that can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents, and many sites can hold up to two units (RVs or tents) per site; there are no electrical or sewer hookups. Amenities include potable water spigots throughout the campground and day-use areas, garbage dumpsters, picnic tables and benches, and fire rings with grill grates at every site. The waterfront facilities include both day-use and overnight dock slips on a first-come, first-served basis (no assigned slips). Fees are $25 per individual RV/trailer/tent (maximum two units per site), and a group site is billed as $50 plus $25 per night for two camping sites (totaling $100 per night); day-use guests at the group area pay $5 per vehicle per day. Reservation and cancellation rules follow recreation.gov policies: an $8 reservation fee is non-refundable, routine cancellations incur a $10 service fee withheld from refunds, and late cancellations (the day before or on arrival) are charged a $10 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee (one-night reservations canceled late forfeit the entire amount). For questions or administrative matters, the Butte Field Office (106 N. Parkmont, Butte, MT 59701; 406-533-7637) manages the site and can provide more details.
