Court Sheriff Campground sits at the very north end of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, about 30 miles east of Helena along Montana Highway 284, with access from the MT-12/287 corridor and local county roads that lead down to the reservoir shoreline. The site is framed by the Big Belt and Elkhorn mountain ranges and provides year-round access to the lake; summer is the busiest season and Reclamation charges campground fees only during the peak period from May 6 through September 10. The developed, paved loop contains 45 campsites in total 41 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites most of which sit along the water. During peak months you'll find vault toilets, potable water, trash and recycling containers, and a campground host on site; concrete boat launches and a seasonal visitor center are maintained by Reclamation in the wider recreation area. For up-to-date, site-specific information and questions about reservations or current conditions call the facility at (406) 475-3920. The reservoir itself is a major feature: roughly 35,200 acres of water and 76 miles of shoreline that support a wide range of activities. On the water you can swim, sail, motorboat, or launch a canoe or kayak into quiet back bays; anglers will find rainbow trout, perch, ling and walleye among the lake's offerings. Three marinas on the reservoir (Goose Bay, Kim's and Yacht Basin) provide boat launching, rental docks and small stores to support longer outings. Summer brings jetskis, windsurfing and water-skiing, while winter opens the lake to ice fishing, ice boating and skating. The surrounding lands hold a surprising variety of wildlife: a nearby wildlife management area at the far end of the reservoir hosts colonies of terns and pelicans, and upland grass and sage patches support chestnut-collared longspurs, long-billed curlews and herds of pronghorn as well as mule and white-tailed deer.
