“If a storm is coming across the lake, prepare for high winds. Very suddenly a wind storm and rain came across the lake and even with all our efforts, ripped our awning on the RV.”
“Host Mel was awesome. Have camped here several 0times and always a great experience.”

Hellgate Campground sits on the north shore of Canyon Ferry Reservoir in an open valley between the Big Belt and Elkhorn mountain ranges, roughly 25 30 miles east of Helena and about 21 miles north of Townsend. The reservoir itself covers some 35,200 surface acres with about 76 miles of shoreline, and the broader lake area supports three marina concessions Goose Bay, Kim's Marina and Yacht Basin that offer boat launching, rental docks and small stores. The shoreline here has a narrow riparian canopy that gives patchy shade along campsites while the surrounding uplands are good habitat for pronghorn, mule and white-tail deer and grassland birds such as Chestnut-collared Longspurs and Long-billed Curlews; a wildlife management area at the reservoir's end hosts colonies of terns and pelicans. Water recreation is the big draw year-round: anglers target rainbow trout, perch, ling and walleye, sailboats and powerboats use the open water, canoeists and kayakers explore quieter back bays, and in winter the lake attracts ice fishers and skaters. The developed campground and group-use area together provide 72 campsites. Of those, 69 sites accommodate both RVs and tents while 3 are tent-only; the campground is arranged in four loops with Loop A holding 19 sites, Loop B 11 sites, Loop C 11 sites and Loop D 18 sites. Individual campsites have a gravel camping pad, picnic table and fire ring, and the park limits one camping unit per site unless a site is explicitly marked as a double. Hellgate Boat Ramp and Day Use Area offers two concrete boat ramps, trailer parking and several picnic spots, and Reclamation's seasonal visitor center plus nearby marina services make launching and resupplying straightforward. There are three group-use shelters with overnight camping Lewis and Clark (15 group campsites; 30' x 60' shelter with 12 picnic tables, 3 grills, 2 group fire rings and 3 vault toilets), York (10 group campsites; 30' x 60' shelter with 12 picnic tables, one large communal fire ring and 1 vault toilet) and Hellgate Bay (5 group campsites; 30' x 36' shelter with 7 picnic tables, 2 grills and a communal fire ring) which are useful for larger gatherings. Fees are charged only during the peak season (May 6 through Sept. 10); for reservations, current conditions or facility-specific questions call the campground at (406) 475-3920 or consult the seasonal visitor center.
