“For a very crowded park and a completely full campground our site still felt private, people were quiet and responsible.”

Avalanche Campground sits in one of Glacier National Park's busiest west-side corridors just west of the Continental Divide, giving campers direct access to the high-country scenery and wildlife that draw people to the park. The campground contains 90 sites split into two loops 56 sites in Loop A and 34 in Loop B with 86 sites configured to accept both RVs and tents and four dedicated tent-only sites. Sites are set with noticeable space between them to help preserve privacy for both tent campers and RVs; note that only 50 of the sites will accommodate vehicles up to 26 feet in length. Basic conveniences include seasonally available potable water and modern restroom buildings with flush toilets and sinks with running water. Avalanche is reachable from either side of the park: most visitors approach from the West Glacier gateway on Highway 2 (about a 33-mile drive from Kalispell), while eastern access comes via the St. Mary/Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor from Browning and Hwy 89. The campground is a practical base for short hikes, wildlife and bird watching, and day trips along Going-to-the-Sun Road and to the park's historic chalets and lodges. Within the broader park you'll find a wide range of activities auto touring, biking, boating, paddling, swimming, fishing, climbing, horseback riding and horse camping, hiking, and visits to historic and cultural sites but at Avalanche specifically expect easy access to two popular day hikes that deliver scenery and chances to spot local birds and mammals. Because potable water and other services are seasonal, and park fees and reservation rules change from year to year, check current Glacier National Park information before you go so you know which facilities are open, whether reservations are required, and which campsites will fit your rig.
