Glacier National Park

Apgar Campground sits among tall firs on the west side of Glacier National Park at the mouth of the Lake McDonald area, offering a shaded, forested setting and easy access to the lake's shore. The facility contains 196 campsites in total: 184 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 12 tent-only sites. Those sites are spread across Loop A (60 sites), Loop B (54 sites), Loop C (35 sites), Loop D (35 sites) and a Hiker/Bicyclist loop of 12 sites, arranged so many sites feel relatively private compared with smaller park campgrounds. Potable water is available within the campground and restrooms are modern flush-toilet facilities with sinks and running water. An on-site amphitheater hosts nightly ranger programs during the season, and five group sites can be reserved in advance for larger parties. From a practical standpoint Apgar is the most convenient base for exploring Glacier's west side. Evening walks to Lake McDonald are only a short stroll from many sites perfect if you want to watch the light shift over the long, glacially carved lake and the campground is a short drive from trailheads that tap into the park's 700+ miles of hiking. Activities in the surrounding park include auto touring along the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road, biking, paddling and boating on park waters, fishing, climbing and horseback opportunities farther afield; Apgar's location makes these easily reachable. Access comes via West Glacier off Highway 2 (about 33 miles from Kalispell/Columbia Falls) or from the St. Mary side via Highway 89 on the east approach; check Glacier National Park's official site for current fees, reservation windows and seasonal opening dates before you go.
