Fish Creek Campground is the park's second-largest developed camping area on Glacier's wetter, western flank, sitting at roughly 3,500 feet above sea level in a densely forested stretch near Lake McDonald. The campground contains 176 sites in all: 167 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, plus 9 tent-only sites. Those sites are arranged in a set of distinct loops Loop A (a small 4-site section and an additional 34-site section), Loop B (54 sites), Loop C (53 sites and designated a no-generator loop), and Loop D (31 sites) and campsites are generally spaced to give a feeling of privacy whether you're in an RV or a tent. Practical amenities include potable water and flush toilets with sinks, and an on-site amphitheater hosts nightly ranger programs during the season. Many sites are shaded by tall conifers and a number offer partial views of Lake McDonald; weather can change quickly here (summer snow is possible, daytime highs sometimes top 90°F, and this part of the park gets the most precipitation), so bring clothing layers and rain gear. Fish Creek is a convenient base for western-park activities: the campground is a short drive about four miles northwest of Glacier's west entrance at West Glacier, accessed from U.S. Highway 2 (roughly 32 miles northeast of Kalispell) so park directions note not to rely solely on GPS. From here you can reach a range of day hikes, including the Rocky Point Trail that winds through a burn area from the 2003 wildfire, and access Lake McDonald for paddling, boating and shoreline fishing and swimming; farther afield the park's 700-plus miles of trails, historic chalets and the famed Going-to-the-Sun Road open up options for longer hikes, auto touring, biking and visiting cultural sites. Wildlife is abundant in Glacier nearly 70 mammal species (including grizzly bears, wolverines, gray wolves and lynx) and more than 270 bird species so expect to see or detect a rich natural community while you're here. Specific fee, reservation and seasonal opening details aren't provided here, so check the National Park Service site or the park's campground reservation page before you go.
