“Loved the group site. It was big enough for all of our group and spacious. It was beautiful and the trailhead was just steps away. ”
“Beautiful campground. Nice and quiet. Very very clean. Nice pull through spots. Clean bathrooms. Great host! Loved the sandy beach and swim area, clean and a big area. ”

McGillivray Campground sits along the western shore of Lake Koocanusa at roughly 2,520 feet, surrounded by dense forest and a thick understory that gives sites a private, shaded feel. The campground contains 39 sites in total: 33 sites configured for both RVs and tents and six tent-only sites, so there are options whether you bring a trailer or want a simple walk-in tent spot. Water access is a major draw here the facility provides both high- and low-water boat ramps, a swim beach and a picnic area on the reservoir. Lake Koocanusa is a large impoundment (about 46,500 acres with more than 127 miles of shoreline) formed by the 422-foot Libby Dam; the river and reservoir extend toward Canada for many miles. Anglers will find kokanee salmon, whitefish and several trout species in the water and the campground hosts fishing derbies several times a year. Bird and wildlife viewing are part of the daily scene as well: osprey often fish around the dam at sunset and bald eagles are commonly seen hunting kokanee in the fall. Facilities at McGillivray support both small family camps and larger gatherings. Two campground group sites (site 7 and site 23) are reservable and each can handle up to 25 people, with parking room for up to five RVs, three tent pads, picnic tables, a fire ring and a large cooking grill; the campground also offers a large group shelter (site 1) that accommodates up to 200 people for reunions or receptions. The shelter includes a rock fireplace, multiple tables, electrical outlets (reservation holders must supply their own generator), two accessible vault toilets and drinking water nearby, two large cooking grills, horseshoe pits, a path to the beach, a fire ring and an adjoining one-acre meadow; a paved parking lot and a gated entrance are provided for large parties (the gate should be closed for security) and firewood is supplied for the shelter only. Note that all individual campsites do not have electrical hook-ups and firewood is not provided for them. Beyond the campground, the broader Kootenai National Forest offers auto touring, climbing, OHV riding, overnight stays in lookout cabins, and extensive wildlife viewing; nearby attractions include guided tours at the Libby Dam visitor center in summer, a scenic 100-mile drive round the reservoir and several trails that lead to waterfalls. The campground is accessed from the Libby area, roughly a 25-mile drive northeast along State Highway 37 and Forest Road 228.
