Rexford Bench sits on an arm of Lake Koocanusa in northwest Montana, about a short drive south of Eureka on Highway 37, close to the Canadian border and downstream from Libby Dam. The campground occupies a ponderosa pine setting at roughly 2,470 feet elevation and gives quick access to the reservoir's 127+ miles of shoreline; sandstone hoodoo formations rise near an inlet and can be reached on foot via the Hoodoo Trail or viewed from a boat. Osprey and bald eagles are commonly seen working the water, especially around Libby Dam at sunset and during fall kokanee runs, and anglers here chase kokanee salmon, whitefish and several trout species community fishing derbies are held several times a year. The larger recreation area includes a day-use swimming beach and both high- and low-water boat ramps, and a loop drive around the reservoir with additional trails and waterfall viewpoints is a popular day trip. The facility side of Rexford Bench is the most developed in Kootenai National Forest: the campground provides 53 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, with a mix of reservable and first-come, first-served spaces and a nearby Kamloops Terrace area and overflow parking for boat trailers and larger rigs. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring with grill; roads and campsite spurs are paved, and accessible flush toilets and drinking water are provided (there are no utility hookups). A campground host is on-site to help visitors, and several short interpretive trails begin in the loop for easy walks to the beach, boat ramp and hoodoos. Beyond swimming, boating and fishing at the campground, the broader Kootenai National Forest offers auto touring, climbing, OHV routes, wildlife viewing, fire lookouts/cabin overnight stays and other backcountry recreation for those who want to explore farther afield.
