About

Dorr Skeels Campground sits at about 2,344 feet on the north end of Bull Lake, a 1,162-acre body of water framed by mature pines. The site contains 10 campsites each can accommodate both RVs and tents and the layout is informal, with most sites averaging about 30 feet in length. A host site is maintained on location, and there are two separate day-use sites with picnic tables and fire rings for shorter visits. Practical amenities include a fully developed boat ramp with dock, potable water, vault toilets and seasonal garbage service; drinking water and garbage pickup are available during the peak season. A security gate is closed nightly at 10:00 p.m. and reopened at 7:00 a.m. by the camp host. Campsites are not currently in the reservation system, so plan on first-come, first-served availability and come prepared for limited hookups and compact site lengths. The campground's main draws are on-the-water activities: a buoyed swimming area with a small beach, easy launching from the boat ramp, and solid fishing right off the shore or by boat. Bull Lake supports brook and bull trout, kokanee, small and largemouth bass, pike, suckers, whitefish and perch, making it a productive spot for anglers. Beyond the lake, Dorr Skeels lies along the western edge of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness and is just north of the Ross Creek Cedars, an ancient cedar grove worth the short drive. The surrounding Kootenai National Forest offers broader opportunities for auto touring, wildlife viewing, OHV use and backpacking or climbing in nearby terrain, so the campground works well as a base for both leisurely water days and longer exploratory outings. For supplies, services such as gas, ice, laundry and a small store are available in Troy roughly a 20 30 minute drive north on Highway 56.
