Sam Owen Campground sits on a wooded peninsula along the east side of Lake Pend Oreille at about 2,000 feet, where stands of pine and cedar fall away to long lake views and a sandy shore. The shoreline here is active in summer: a beach draws swimmers and sunbathers, and the on-site boat ramp and dock make launching kayaks, canoes and powerboats straightforward. A short, half-mile accessible route Sam Owen Trail #4 climbs to a bench-lined overlook above Owens Bay that many visitors use as an easy out-and-back hike, while anglers head out from shore or boat to chase kamloops (rainbow trout strain), Dolly Varden, northern pike, other trout and catfish. The campground shares the peninsula with the Sam Owen Game Preserve, so deer sightings are common and birdwatching is a regular reward; in winter the area is used for skiing, when snow conditions allow. Practical facilities are geared to both car campers and RVs: the site inventory is 78 total campsites, of which 77 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and one is tent-only. Campsites do not offer electrical hookups, though a group picnic shelter is equipped with electricity and lighting; the campground does provide accessible flush toilets, drinking water, a dump station, a picnic area, paved overflow parking and an amphitheater used for educational programs. For access, Sam Owen is about 21 miles east of Sandpoint along State Highway 200, with a short turn onto Peninsula Road to reach the recreation area. Because fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings can change, check the Idaho Panhandle National Forests website or contact the local ranger district before you go; beyond the campground, the surrounding national forest supports a wide range of activities boating, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, auto touring on the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway, and other forest uses listed by the district.
