McGregor Lake Campground sits at about 3,900 feet on the west end of McGregor Lake, a 1,240-acre body of water that is the largest lake in the Kootenai National Forest and part of the Thompson Chain of Lakes. You'll find it on US Route 2 roughly halfway between Libby and Kalispell about 53 miles southeast of Libby or 32 miles west of Kalispell with a short turn off the highway to the campground entrance. The setting is a stand of young pines along the lake edge and the area is known for fishing: McGregor Lake supports a strong mackinaw (lake trout) population and anglers often come specifically for trophy-sized fish. A paved boat ramp gives direct access to the water for fishing, water skiing, and boating, while swimmers can use the beach and day-use picnic sites nearby; a 2.9-mile McGregor Lake Shoreline Trail provides a lakeside walk for hikers and birdwatchers. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 27 all 27 sites function as both RV and tent sites, including one host site, and most campsites average about 32 feet in length, so larger rigs should plan accordingly. The campground is primitive but serviceable: vault toilets, drinking water, and garbage service are provided during the peak season. Campsites are not currently on the reservation system, so spots are generally first-come, first-served; however, a reservable group site (a 120' x 140' gravel parking area with tables and a fire ring) can be booked through Recreation.gov if you need space for a larger party. Day-use picnic areas with tables and fire rings sit close to the beach, and the broader Kootenai National Forest around McGregor Lake offers additional opportunities for wildlife viewing, auto touring, and other outdoor pursuits.
