“This campground is beautiful! Immaculately clean thanks to Bill, the campground host. We have been camping for 50 years and he is the best host we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He and his sweet dog, Jellybean, should be given an award. ”
“They’ve done a great job with all the updates at Rombo, in clouding having fresh and drinkable water! The sites are immaculate. So many wonderful memories of one of our favorite spots in the world!”
“ the camp host was extremely helpful. The camp ground is always clean and quiet and well kept.”

Rombo Campground sits along the West Fork Bitterroot River at about 4,600 feet, where stands of yellow-barked ponderosa mingle with fir, aspen and lodgepole pine to shade picnic areas and campsites. The river is the focal point here: anglers routinely wade and fly-fish for trout and mountain whitefish, and during high water season the current opens up for kayaks and small rafts. Painted Rocks Lake is roughly five miles to the south and provides a short side trip for swimming, boating and additional fishing. Trails and a network of unimproved roads fan out from the campground, offering options for day hikes to nearby peaks, mountain biking and off-highway vehicle exploration; the broader Bitterroot National Forest also supports horseback riding, dispersed winter recreation and hunting, so plan activities by season and check trail and road conditions before heading out. Wildlife viewing is excellent bald eagles, mule and white-tailed deer, moose, elk and even bighorn sheep are all possible sightings so bring binoculars and quiet patience. The campground has 16 total campsites, and all 16 both accommodate RVs and tents; four of those sites are accessible. Sites will hold up to 10 people and two vehicles, and each site is furnished with a picnic table, campfire ring and grill. Recent construction in the summer of 2023 added a couple of sites available for reservations as well as on a first-come, first-served basis, but utility hookups are not provided, parking surfaces are gravel, and accessible pit toilets and drinking water are supplied; a campground host is on site. Access to Rombo is via Highway 93 south of Darby turn toward Forest Road 473 and continue southwest roughly 18 miles on that route to the campground and the nearest basic services are in Conner about 16 miles away, with full services (fuel, lodging, groceries) in Darby about 24 miles from the site. For historic interest, the Alta Ranger Station the first Forest Service ranger station in the U.S., built in 1899 is a short distance from Rombo, and Horse Creek Hot Springs lies about 29 miles away on a gravel road that typically requires a high-clearance vehicle.
