“ Very quiet and peaceful. We spent two weeks there and the bathrooms were always clean!”

Alta Campground sits along the West Fork of the Bitterroot River at about 4,580 feet, where stands of yellow-barked ponderosa mingle with fir, aspen and lodgepole pines to shade a small, quietly wooded loop of sites. The river is the campground's defining feature: fly-fishing and wading are constant draws and, when snowmelt raises flows, canoeing and rafting become options. Hikers and riders can access a network of nearby trails and rough roads that lead to peaks and viewpoints named Lookout, Razorback and Thunder Mountains and to Beaver and Deer Creek Points; an interpretive Alta Pine trail adds a short, educational outing. Five miles north is Painted Rocks Lake, a local spot for swimming, boating and trout and mountain whitefish fishing, and the river corridor brings regular wildlife sightings from songbirds and bald eagles to mule and white-tailed deer, moose, elk and the occasional bighorn sheep. The campground is small and practical: 14 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents (each site allows up to 10 people and two vehicles), three of which are designated accessible. Sites have gravel parking spurs, a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; there are no utility hookups. Visitors will find accessible vault toilets, drinking water, a campground host on site and trash collection bins spaced through the facility. Alta is reached by traveling south from Darby on Highway 93 and then following Forest Road 473 into the West Fork corridor a forest-road approach that underlines the area's remote character with Conner about 27 miles to the north and Darby roughly 32 miles away for services. Nearby history and side trips include the Alta Ranger Station (the Forest Service's first ranger station, built in 1899), the historic Hughes Creek gold area and Horse Creek hot springs, the latter reached via an 18-mile gravel road where a high-clearance vehicle is recommended. Reservations are handled through the NRRS; note a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations and late cancellations can incur additional charges. To reduce wildlife attractants (bears are active in the Bitterroot), store food in vehicles or hard-sided campers as directed.
