Wheatland Park sits on the shore of Pomme de Terre Lake in the tree-topped hills of the west-central Missouri Ozarks, where the lake's cool, clear spring-fed water has earned it the local nickname "Gem of the Ozarks." The French name Pomme de Terre literally "apple of the earth" or potato reflects early trappers' observations of plants along the waterways. The reservoir itself is long and winding, with 7,790 surface acres and roughly 113 miles of shoreline broken into coves and points. The campground offers 61 total campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents; 36 sites include electric and water hookups while the remaining 25 provide electric only. On-site amenities include two shower houses, a swim beach, a playground, a boat ramp and courtesy dock, and an accessible group picnic shelter with electricity that fits about 75 people. The lake is a draw for boaters, water skiers and anglers largemouth bass, crappie and white bass are common, and stocked muskies bring anglers from across the region. Many of the lake's sheltered coves provide quieter waters for fishing even when main channels are busy with powerboats. Beyond water recreation, the area supports hiking, wildlife viewing, picnicking and environmental education opportunities; the park also lists a specialized sport site and other recreation concessions nearby. A well-regarded golf course and a prominent dirt race track sit close to Wheatland Park for off-water diversions.
