“Been here many times. Well managed with spacious campsites.”
“Do not listen to GPS, when you see the “Soldier Lake Recreation Area” sign, turn right/left and follow the paved road. If you are on a dirt road you are in the wrong spot….. trust me:)”

Soldier Lake Campground sits along the shoreline of a small, 15-acre lake ringed by pines, aspen and maples, offering a quietly shaded place to camp without feeling remote from the roads that access the Upper Peninsula. The campground is compact and rustic, with 43 single-family sites that accommodate both tents and RVs; each site includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring, and vault toilets and drinking water are provided on site. There are no electrical, sewer, or water hookups, so plan for dry camping or self-contained RV needs. Check-in is any time after 2 p.m. (early arrivals are charged for the previous night), and reservation sites must be canceled at least seven days in advance; note also that reservation sites cannot be converted into walk-in sites. For up-to-date facility information call the Hiawatha office at (906) 643-7900. The lake is the campground's main draw: two sandy beaches and a day-use area make swimming and shore-side relaxation easy, and only non-motorized boating is allowed on Soldier Lake, so kayaks and canoes are the way to explore the water. The day-use area also serves as an access point for the North Country National Scenic Trail, making the campground a good base for day hikes; within the larger Hiawatha National Forest you'll also find opportunities for biking, fishing, horse camping and wildlife viewing. Picnic amenities include two large day-use picnic areas with tables and grills plus a sheltered picnic spot with a fireplace; vault toilets and drinking water are available in the picnic zones as well. The campground is accessible from M-28 near Raco roughly 30 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie and the small town of Strongs, seven miles to the west, provides basic services like fuel, a general store and restaurants.
