“Description of sites ie pull through and size was not accurate. This needs to be reviewed by your staff. ”

Jan C 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Very nice campsites with good separation. Lovely swimmable lake and an incredible hiking trail up to a stunning lookout point. Pit toilets but clean and well maintained. Easy drive to area features such as Whitefish Point and Sault Ste. Marie.”

Roberta S 4 · Sep 2025 · Recreation.gov

“We stated here for several days in late summer. The campground was kept up nicely and not to overcrowded. Will visit again.”

About

Monocle Lake Campground sits at the south end of a 172-acre inland lake in the northeastern corner of Hiawatha National Forest, a short drive off the Whitefish Bay National Scenic Byway and roughly 6 miles west of Bay Mills. The site's mixed hardwoods aspens, maples, birch and pockets of pine shade the campground and frame open views of the water; private homes also line parts of the shore. The lake is a working angler's destination: it holds walleye, smallmouth bass, pike and perch, and two man-made reefs just off the eastern shore near the campground draw good fishing. Recreation centers on boating, swimming and hiking the campground has a paved boat launch and a parking area large enough for vehicles and trailers, and a day-use beach and picnic area with tables and grills. A 14.5-mile Monocle Lake Trail rings the lake (about 2 miles of the trail include interpretive displays, and the first 1,100 feet are on an elevated, accessible boardwalk), and the campground is less than two miles from the historic Point Iroquois Lighthouse; Sault Ste. Marie and the U.S. Canada border are about 25 miles away, while Tahquamenon Falls lies roughly 35 miles to the southwest. For current conditions or facility-specific questions, call (906) 643-7900. Facilities are straightforward and oriented to low-impact use: the campground contains 42 single-family sites in total 41 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site each shaded and equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. There are accessible vault toilets and drinking water available; hookups are not provided. A paved boat launch and adjacent parking make getting on the water easy, and the day-use area next to the parking lot includes additional picnic tables, grills, drinking water and accessible vault toilets for swimmers and day visitors. Some campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis while others are reservable; check-in is any time after 2:00 p.m. (early arrivals are charged for the previous day), and reservations should be canceled at least seven days in advance reservation sites cannot be traded for walk-in sites. Beyond the campground itself, Hiawatha National Forest offers a wider range of activities biking, horse camping, interpretive programs, fire lookout and cabin overnight opportunities, wildlife viewing and more so Monocle Lake makes a practical base for both water-focused days and longer explorations of the eastern Upper Peninsula.
