Lake Michigan Campground at St. Ignace sits on a bluff between US-2 and the lake, its 33 campsites stretched along sandy rises where 20- to 30-foot dunes shape the shoreline and channel constant wind and waves. Sites alternate between shaded pockets and open sand, and most are just a short walk down from the dunes to broad, sandy beaches where high winds can produce strong shore-breaks good for body-surfing and watching shorebirds such as the Spotted Sandpiper. Hikers and skiers will find plenty to do: the site connects to the Sand Dunes Cross-Country Ski Trail and the North Country National Scenic Trail, offering miles of varied terrain from dune ridges to forested stretches. Anglers can fish on Lake Michigan, though many who want walleye, pike, bass, perch and crappie drive the five miles to Brevort Lake; the town of St. Ignace is about 18 miles east along US-2 for groceries, fuel and services. Facilities are straightforward and geared to self-sufficient camping: all 33 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, parking spurs are grass and dirt, and there are picnic tables, campfire rings with grills, accessible vault toilets and drinking water available. There are no electric or sewer hookups onsite, and a trash collection bin is provided; a dump station can be found at nearby Brevort Lake. Some sites are first-come, first-served while others take reservations check-in is any time after 2 p.m. (early arrivals will be charged for the previous day) and reservation holders must cancel at least seven days in advance if plans change; reservation sites cannot be traded for walk-up sites. The campground address is W 3853 US-2, Moran, MI 49760 from the Mackinac Bridge take US-2 about 18 miles west to the entrance and for facility-specific questions call (906) 643-7900.
