“The site itself was really nice. View of the lake was beautiful. Unfortunately someone had taken a dump on the ground and left their mess for everyone else to enjoy. Log trucks have torn up the road in, high clearance vehicle and camper are a must. ”
“Big pine tree in the middle of the site makes it harder to get camper in the most level spot and maneuver it around to pull out. Gravel hurts the feet and it's also uncomfortable for the dog. ”
“Secluded, off the road, quiet if your neighbors are, we had one neighbor, caught a 2lb bass first night. There's a muskrat in the neighborhood so you'll hear that at night. Lots of deer around. Beautiful place to stay! Plenty of tree cover and beach access. ”

Four primitive campsites occupy the north end of Chicago Lake, a 188-acre inland lake in the Hiawatha National Forest. The four sites are grouped close together among hardwoods and tall pines and offer a simple, rustic experience with very few amenities: there is no drinking water on site and only primitive toilets at Site 2 and in the small area between Sites 3 and 4. Three of the sites accommodate both RVs and tents while one is tent-only; total campground capacity is four campsites. Site 1 is a very small, heavily wooded site (20 x 15 ft) that feels private but has poor road access 4-wheel drive and tent camping are recommended there and the maximum occupancy is eight people. Sites 2, 3 and 4 are larger (Site 2: 55 x 45 ft; Site 3: 60 x 50 ft; Site 4: 55 x 50 ft) and can each hold up to 16 people; Site 2 and Site 4 can accommodate trailers more easily, while Site 3 sits closer to the shoreline and has limited turning room for trailers. Recreation is centered on the water and the nearby trail network: an improved gravel, back-in boat ramp sits adjacent to Site 4 (the access road to Sites 3 and 4 is shared by anglers using the public launch), and Chicago Lake supports good populations of northern pike and bluegill, with smaller numbers of largemouth bass and perch Michigan fishing licenses are required. Swimming conditions vary across the sites (best at Sites 3 and 4, fair at Site 2 and poor at Site 1), and within minutes you'll find horse, bike and hiking trails, a fishing pier, and kayak/canoe rentals; bait, groceries, gas and other supplies are available roughly seven miles northeast in the Thunder Lake area. The campground is accessed from Forest Highway 13 north of US-2 roughly midway between Rapid River and Manistique via County Road N-3 and a short forest road spur; for up-to-date information on fees, reservations and seasonal access call the local ranger district at (906) 474-6442 or (906) 387-2512.
