“There was no Bear Lake near Cooks MI. I contacted Recreation.gov regarding receiving a refund on Aug. 9, when it was confirmed that the property would be contacted and would reach out. I have heard nothing from them. ”

Bear Lake Campsite sits above a 21-acre inland lake in the Hiawatha National Forest, occupying a single, somewhat secluded site that looks down over water fringed by paper birch, aspen and oak. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1 the lone campsite is set up to accommodate either an RV or a tent (SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: - 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) and holds up to eight people. The setting is intentionally primitive: there is NO drinking water and NO toilets at the site, and the campsite's small day-use launch on the south end is a carry-in/back-in landing rather than a full marina. Bear Lake is known locally as a brook trout fishery that receives annual stocking, so anglers should plan ahead and bring a Michigan fishing license; swimming is possible but limited, with a thin layer of sand over a mucky bottom that makes it marginal for long swims. This is a rustic, low-amenity stop best suited to campers prepared to be self-sufficient and to travel the last miles on forest roads: the site is reached north of Cooks (on County Road 437 and short spur forest roads FR 2217/2696) and is minutes from a network of horse, bike and hiking trails. Within a bit more than a mile you can find services and conveniences bait shops, general stores, a fishing pier and kayak/canoe rentals and groceries, gas, ice and deli items are available about five miles northeast in the Thunder Lake area on County Road 437. Typical activities centered on the site include primitive camping, fishing, wildlife viewing, berry picking, and paddling from the carry-in landing; more developed recreation opportunities across the Hiawatha include biking, interpretive programs, and horse camping.
