Camp Cook Campsite occupies a single, reservable site within Hiawatha National Forest that was once the location of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The campsite sits in a large grassy clearing framed by hardwoods and pines, a layout that makes it unusually well suited for a large family or group gathering; the site can accommodate both RVs and tents and is rated for up to 24 people. Unlike many more primitive dispersed sites in the forest, Camp Cook provides potable drinking water and a toilet, but there is no lake at the site, no boat access, and no on-site swimming. You can reserve the site either singly or as a group; for local details call (906) 474-6442 or for general information call (906) 387-2512. The campsite is reached from Forest Highway 13 roughly between Rapid River and Manistique via short forest-road spurs to FR 2052B. The site sits adjacent to the Fishdam River, which draws anglers looking for brook trout, and it's popular with hunters especially during deer season because of its amenities and proximity to forested hunting areas. While swimming is not offered at Camp Cook, a sandy beach at Camp 7 Lake Campground is about two miles away, and a variety of trailheads for hiking, biking, and horse riding are only minutes from the site. Within a few miles you'll also find a fishing pier, kayak and canoe rentals, and small bait and convenience outlets; fuller services groceries, gas, ice and camping supplies are about nine miles northeast on County Road 437 in the Thunder Lake area. Remember that Michigan fishing licenses are required, and plan for limited infrastructure beyond the single campsite's provided water and toilet.
