Mowe Lake Campsites sit on the shore of a 25-acre inland lake in the Hiawatha National Forest, about 14 miles east of Rapid River along Forest Highway 13 and reached by a short run of narrow forest roads that handle moderate-sized vehicles and trailers. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 2 both RV and tent sites and each site is sized for a single family and a trailer, with a maximum of 8 people per site. Site 1 is a roughly 60 ft by 40 ft semi-open spot tucked between hardwoods and pines; Site 2 is similar but a bit smaller. Facilities are minimal: there is no drinking water, a single primitive toilet shared by both sites, and boat access is carry-in only. An unimproved sand-based access across from Site 2 makes launching small boats practical (small trailers are recommended); the access and sites retain a rustic, low-amenity character that favors campers who plan to be self-sufficient. The lake supports a healthy fishery northern pike, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow perch are commonly found but neither campsite offers good swimming conditions. Within a short drive or a mile-plus walk you'll find trailheads for hiking, biking and horseback riding, a fishing pier, and services such as bait, groceries, gas, and rental outfitters; more extensive supplies, ice, boat rentals and food are available about six miles northwest on Forest Highway 13. Licenses are required for fishing in Michigan waters. For up-to-date information on conditions, fees, seasonal access or reservation policies, contact the local offices at (906) 474-6442 or (906) 387-2512 before you go.
