“New hosts were very nice. Bathrooms very clean. We love Widewaters Campground! We were disappointed to find out it’s closing so soon this year. Fall is our favorite time to camp ☹️”

About

Widewaters Campground sits in a quiet band of mature hardwoods on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, roughly a 16-mile drive from Munising along Forest Highway 13 and a short spur on Forest Road 2262. The site occupies forested land between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, immediately between Irwin Lake and the Indian River, so water is always close at hand anglers and paddlers find brook trout and small lakes to explore, and canoeing or kayaking on the river is a common way to spend an afternoon. The 9-mile Bruno's Run Trail runs right through the campground, threading past a string of small lakes; that singletrack and multiuse route is popular for hiking and mountain biking in warm months and becomes a corridor for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. Beyond the campground itself, the wider Hiawatha National Forest offers additional outdoor options biking, boating, overnight stays in fire lookout cabins, horse camping, interpretive programs, picnicking, swimming, water sports and wildlife viewing so Widewaters makes a good base for a range of day trips. The campground contains 32 sites in total; each of those 32 sites is set up to accommodate both tents and RVs, and they vary from heavily wooded, private sites to more open sites with less screening. A few sites sit along the river with direct water access, and a portion of sites are kept on a first-come, first-served basis rather than reservable, so plan accordingly if you need a guaranteed spot. Every campsite includes a picnic table and campfire ring, some have grills, and visitors will find drinking water and accessible vault toilets on site. Boat ramps are available at the campground and also at nearby Fish Lake for launching small watercraft. Because Widewaters is accessed by forest roads and its seasonal operations, fees, exact reservation windows and road conditions can change, it's a good idea to check current information with the Hiawatha National Forest office or the managing reservation service before you go.
