About

Council Lake Campsites occupy four modest sites along the southern shore of Council Lake in the central Hiawatha National Forest, placed among mixed hardwoods and pines that give quick shade and a forested, low-elevation lakeshore feel. Each of the four sites sized to accept both tents and small RVs comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring; a single pit toilet sits closest to site 1 (toilet paper is not provided). There is no drinking water on site, so plan to bring your own and carry out all garbage. The day-use area has additional tables, a campfire ring with grill, and a small beach for swimming; vehicle access ends at the lake via Forest Road 226 after heading south from Wetmore on Forest Highway 13 off M-28, about a short forest-road drive from Munising/Shingleton. Each campsite allows up to eight people, and because the sites are rustic with minimal facilities, you should check with the ranger districts for current fees, reservation rules, and seasonal access before you go local information is available at (906) 387-2512 and the Hiawatha National Forest general number at (906) 474-6442. Recreation at Council Lake centers on low-impact water pursuits and quiet lakeside camping. The lake supports yellow perch, rock and largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, bullhead and northern pike so bring a Michigan fishing license if you plan to fish and is limited to non-motorized boats from the campground (carry-in access only); a formal boat ramp is available nearby at Red Jack Lake. A short portage links Council Lake to Bar Lake and the Indian Wild and Scenic River, making the spot appealing for canoe and kayak trips that continue into the neighboring chain of lakes. Beyond swimming, paddling and angling at Council Lake, the wider Hiawatha National Forest offers hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, picnicking and other backcountry experiences so use Council Lake as a quiet basecamp or a paddling stop within a larger forest itinerary.
