Island Lake Campground is a compact, quiet site tucked into a stand of mostly pine with a few mixed hardwoods, the kind of setting that keeps the canopy open and the needle-strewn ground familiar to people who prefer classic pine forest camping. The campground contains 11 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, arranged as single-family sites plus one group site; some single sites may be doubled up to hold two families, but each family must pay the applicable site fee when sharing. Facilities are modest but focused on water access: the campground offers shore fishing and a boat slip intended for small carry-in boats, canoes or kayaks, so anglers and paddlers can launch light craft directly from camp. Recreational opportunities center on the lake and the larger Hiawatha National Forest. Island Lake draws anglers after largemouth bass, bluegill and perch, and paddlers will find calm water for canoeing and kayaking; beyond the campsite there are hiking, biking and ATV trail networks that provide options for short walks or longer excursions. The campground sits a short drive south of Munising (accessible via forest roads off M-28/Forest Highway 13) and is within easy reach of regional attractions: several waterfalls lie nearby, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Grand Island on Lake Superior are roughly 15 miles away for day trips. If you plan to share a site, remember the site-fee policy for doubled-up sites and come prepared with carry-in boats or canoes if you intend to use the boat slip.
