“This is a great site! The bathrooms were well maintained, the sites were nice and private, and there is so much to do in the area! My highlight was looking for yooperlites on the beach.”
“Site 25 Great campground, clean vaulted restrooms Would definitely recommend ”
“Much to do. Hiking, biking, boating. However, the roads in park are in sad need of repair. Park itself was nice. ”

Bay Furnace Campground sits on the south shore of Lake Superior just off Highway 28 in Alger County, about 3 miles west of Munising at the village of Christmas (across from the Kewadin Casino). The site's 49 campsites are all configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, and they spread among maple and other deciduous trees so some sites look out over the lake while others sit closer to Furnace Creek. There is no direct lake access from the campground itself, but a day-use picnic area near the lakeshore provides water and vault toilets for shore-side visits, and boat ramps in Munising (less than 5 miles) and AuTrain (about 10 miles) put anglers and boaters onto Lake Superior. The campground is well positioned for day trips to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, waterfall trails, and the 10-minute ferry to Grand Island; local outfitters also run paid boat excursions to view the cliffs and sea caves. On-site facilities are straightforward and practical: each site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, with accessible vault toilets and drinking water available in the campground and day-use area. Some sites can be reserved in advance while additional sites are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan ahead in peak season and check current fees, seasonal dates, and reservation details with the Hiawatha National Forest before you go. Recreational opportunities within the Forest and the local area include hiking, biking, boating, fishing (Lake Superior lake trout and salmon best fished by boat), swimming, wildlife viewing, interpretive programs, and even options for overnight cabin or lookout rentals elsewhere in the forest. For campers who appreciate shoreline light shows, Bay Furnace offers clear views for sunrise and sunset and, on winter or low-activity nights, occasional northern lights.
