Au Train Lake Campground sits on the south end of AuTrain Lake in Alger County, about 10 miles southwest of Munising and roughly 5 miles from the small lakeside town of AuTrain. The campground occupies rolling, forested terrain of pine and aspen with adjacent open and tree-covered wetlands that slope down to the water, giving many sites a sheltered, wooded feel. There are 33 total campsites, and all 33 accommodate both RVs and tents; sites are generally large and wooded and each includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. The campground provides accessible vault toilets and potable drinking water, and the parking area includes a boat ramp with ample room for turning and trailer parking. Some campsites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan accordingly; boat rentals and additional services can be found in AuTrain. The lake itself is the main draw: its size makes it a natural venue for water skiing, general boating, swimming and fishing anglers commonly catch bass and several types of perch and canoeists also use the lake and the AuTrain River that winds out toward Lake Superior. From the campground you can step onto the two-mile Songbird interpretive trail, a mix of forest, field, bog and lakeshore that is popular for birding, and a wildlife viewing platform at nearby Buck Bay and Buck Bay Creek offers another reliable place to scan for waterfowl and other wetland species. Beyond the campground, Hiawatha National Forest supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits including biking, boating, camping, fire lookouts/cabins overnight, fishing, hiking, horse camping, interpretive programs, picnicking, swimming, water sports and wildlife viewing, making the area suitable for family trips and for visitors looking to combine lake time with broader forest recreation.
