Upper Payette Lake Campground sits on the western shore of a quiet, no-wake lake about 16 miles north of McCall, Idaho, reached via Warren Wagon Road/Forest Highway 21 and a short run on a gravel forest road. At roughly 5,900 feet elevation, campsites sit beneath Engelmann spruce and lodgepole pine, offering partial shade and pockets of summer wildflowers; summer days tend to be warm and nights cool. The site inventory includes 21 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, and the campground also offers two group sites that can hold about 20 and 30 guests respectively. All sites are accessible and a mix of sites provide lake views or direct lake access. Roads and parking spurs are gravel; vault toilets and drinking water are available, and there are paved pathways, a day-use area and a boat ramp in the campground for easy shoreline access. The lake itself is the focal point for water-based activity fishing, canoeing and kayaking are the main draws on this quiet stretch of water and a paved, mile-long Shoreline Trail leaves from inside the campground for easy walking or biking along the water. Several additional hiking and biking routes begin just across the road, so you can string together short lakeside loops or longer backcountry outings into the Salmon River Mountains. Payment and reservation management is handled through Recreation.gov; some sites may allow on-site payment by scanning a QR code with the Recreation.gov mobile app, so download the free app before you arrive since cellular service can be limited.
