Amanita Campground sits on the west shore of Lake Cascade at about 4,850 feet in elevation, a short drive west of the small town of Donnelly and roughly 95 miles north of Boise along Highway 55. The site is set among mixed-growth conifers with summer wildflowers carpeting open spots, and several campsites have direct shoreline access and lake views. This is a very small facility total campsites: 6 composed of single-family sites configured for both RVs and tents, each equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring and grill. Roads and parking spurs inside the campground are gravel; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, but there is no electricity or hookups. A campground host can usually be found at nearby Rainbow Point Campground, which also provides the closest boat ramp. The lake is the main attraction: Lake Cascade supports boating, water skiing, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing, and anglers commonly fish for rainbow trout, coho salmon, smallmouth bass and perch. The boat ramp and additional day-use features are at Rainbow Point, while numerous hiking and ATV routes fan out from the area for land-based exploration. Birdwatchers and wildlife viewers will notice waterfowl, songbirds, pelicans and occasional bald eagles around the shoreline. Because Amanita has so few sites and basic services (no electric hookups), campers should plan accordingly and check with Boise National Forest for current fee, reservation and seasonal-availability information before arriving. The broader Boise National Forest also offers biking, horseback riding, OHV trails, hunting, winter sports, picnicking and access to overnight fire lookouts or cabins for those who want to extend their stay in the region.
