“Great hiking; fishing from shore was sparse. Beautifully treed. Great tent sites, clean toilets, friendly camp host. Be aware of the elevation if you have a heart condition.”
“Great location and well maintained cg. Camp host is amazing and very knowledgeable about the area.”
“Camp host, Jill, is sociable, and willingly offers information to questions. She keeps an eye out for guests and can reach out to emergency services if needed despite poor cell service; also does a diligent job of caring for camp facilities.”

Grouse Campground sits on the shore of Goose Lake about 16 miles north of McCall, Idaho, reached by the paved drive toward Brundage Mountain that becomes gravel as you climb Forest Road 257; expect a winding, two-lane approach before the final gravel miles to the turnoff. The campground occupies a forest of Engelmann spruce and lodgepole pine at roughly 6,500 feet, with summer wildflowers around the sites and the lake shoreline a short three-minute walk from most campsites. There are 21 total campsites a mix of single and double-family units and every site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; most offer scenic lake views. Roads and parking spurs are gravel, vault toilets and drinking water are provided, and the campground includes a horse-unloading ramp and hitching rail located near the boat ramp. All sites are described as accessible. Payment options may include an on-site Scan and Pay QR code through the Recreation.gov mobile app, so download the free app before you arrive if you plan to use that feature, because cell service in this part of the Payette National Forest can be limited; check Recreation.gov for current fees, reservation options, and seasonal opening information. Goose Lake itself is managed as a no-wake lake and is the focal point for on-site recreation: canoeing, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow and brook trout are the primary water activities accessible directly from the campground. The area around Grouse has numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding and dirt-bike use, with destinations such as the Granite Mountain Lookout and Goose Creek Falls within reach of a day trip from camp. Brundage Mountain Resort is nearby for scenic chairlift rides and lift-served mountain biking and hiking if you want a change of pace. Beyond the immediate campground, the broader Payette National Forest offers a wide range of outdoor pursuits auto touring, biking, boating, horse camping, OHV use, winter sports, wildlife viewing, hunting, picnicking, swimming and more so plan according to the activities you want and confirm trail and road conditions before heading out.
