Mesa Falls Scenic Byway
Open in Google Maps ↗
Grandview Campground sits directly off the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway, immediately adjacent to the Lower Mesa Falls overlook and about a mile from Upper Mesa Falls, making it an excellent base if your priority is waterfall access rather than a large campground experience. There are eight sites total; each is configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and every campsite includes an electric hookup, a picnic table and a campfire ring. Basic amenities are provided: vault toilets and drinking water are on site. The campground's compact size and roadside position mean short walks to overlooks and trailheads rather than long, remote hikes from your rig; to reach it from Ashton you simply follow ID-47 (Mesa Falls Scenic Byway) northeast and turn toward the Lower Mesa Falls parking/overlook area. The Mesa Falls Recreation Area supplies the most notable local recreation: Upper Mesa Falls has a staffed interpretive center, an accessible path and a close-up overlook, and on sunny days a rainbow often appears in the mist from about 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. An abandoned railroad bed repurposed as a trail runs from Bear Gulch toward West Yellowstone, offering hiking, biking and horseback options with multiple entry points along the way, while numerous other trails crisscross the vicinity. Wildlife is abundant here expect to see eagles and osprey near the river and, seasonally, moose, elk, deer and smaller mammals. Nearby attractions include Harriman State Park (noted for Blue Ribbon trout fly fishing and trumpeter swans), Island Park with its reservoirs and boat ramps, and Yellowstone National Park about an hour's drive away. Because Grandview is small and services/seasonal access can change, check the Caribou-Targhee National Forest website or contact the local ranger district for current fees, reservation rules and opening dates before you go.
