TARGHEE NATIONAL FOREST
Open in Google Maps ↗
Warm River Campground sits along the slow-moving Warm River at about 5,200 feet in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, where willow thickets line the riverbanks and scattered pines provide partial shade. The site inventory is compact but flexible: a total of 24 campsites, of which 14 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 10 are tent-only, plus a single large group site that can hold up to 100 guests. Basic services on-site include vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection, and the campground host sells firewood. The river itself is the campground's main draw visitors commonly float the gentle current on inner tubes and anglers fish for whitefish and brook, rainbow and cutthroat trout right from shore or a short wade. Trail access and regional recreation are immediate advantages here. Numerous trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding start near the campground, leading to natural springs, waterfalls and remnants of old railroad lines and tunnels; farther afield, Island Park's lakes and streams offer more water access and wilderness day-trip options. Ashton, about nine miles away, provides fuel and grocery services, and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are within a couple hours' drive for day or overnight excursions. The broader Caribou-Targhee National Forest supports activities from wildlife viewing and picnicking to OHV use and winter sports, but conditions and availability can change seasonally check the forest's official website or recreation.gov for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal access, and confirm road and trail conditions before you go. Anglers should observe Idaho fishing regulations and everyone recreating on the river should plan appropriate safety gear for floating or wading.
