Buttermilk Campground sits on the eastern edge of Island Park Reservoir at about 6,200 feet, roughly 30 miles south of West Yellowstone and a similar distance north of Ashton, Idaho. The sites are shaded intermittently by lodgepole pines and open grassy areas where summer wildflowers appear, and the surrounding landscape is shaped by the overlapping Henry's Fork and Island Park calderas. Anglers come for world-class water the Henry's Fork and nearby Henry's Lake produce rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout as well as kokanee, while Island Park Reservoir supports boating and water-skiing (the reservoir is used for irrigation and the level recedes during summer but is generally usable all season). Hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and ATV users will find many trails nearby, including access toward long routes such as the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and the Nez Perce Trail; birdwatchers and wildlife viewers can expect to encounter moose, elk, bald eagles and Sandhill cranes in the area. The Big Springs float trip and the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway (about 13 miles south) are close enough for half-day excursions, and Yellowstone's west entrance is under an hour away for day trips. The campground is arranged with two single-family loops and a group loop and contains 21 campsites in total; all 21 are configured for both RVs and tents. A large group site is available and can accommodate up to 150 people, for which the posted fees are $65 per night Sunday Thursday and $130 per night Friday Saturday (no weekly rate). Basic amenities at Buttermilk include vault toilets, drinking water, and a concrete boat ramp with docks located between the group and single-family loops; access to the campground is on a paved road while interior loop roads and parking spurs are gravel. One site is noted to have a 15-amp electrical hookup. Because some details such as seasonal reservation availability and specific RV length limits can change, plan to check current Caribou-Targhee National Forest information before you go; the campground supports a wide range of activities boating, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, OHV use, picnicking, swimming, wildlife viewing and winter sports making it a practical base for exploring Island Park and the Henry's Fork country.
