Big Springs Warming Hut sits in Island Park, Idaho about 22 miles south of West Yellowstone, Montana along Highway 20 near Mack's Inn, at roughly 6,300 feet elevation. The site sits where Big Springs issues as the headwaters of Henry's Fork, one of the country's largest springs and a nationally respected trout fishery; anglers come here for rainbow and brook trout while paddlers and tubers launch on a 4.5-mile National Recreation Water Trail that makes a pleasant three-hour float to Macks Inn. The landscape around the hut is classic Island Park lodgepole pine stands opening onto grassy meadows dotted with summer wildflowers, set inside the overlapping Henry's Fork and Island Park calderas and wildlife is a regular presence (moose, bald eagles and Sandhill cranes are commonly seen along the river, and the broader area supports elk, deer and both black and grizzly bears). Besides river recreation, miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicles thread the area, and long-distance routes such as the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and the Nez Perce Trail pass nearby. Island Park Reservoir, Henry's Lake and the full services of Macks Inn are a short drive away, and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks are within easy reach for day trips. The warming hut itself is a fully enclosed, concrete-floored building that can accommodate groups the interior holds several picnic tables, a wood-burning stove, overhead lighting and electrical outlets, and the site's large parking area has a small number of 20-amp electrical hookups along its edge. Outside amenities include picnic tables, grills and a campfire circle, and a vault toilet is located next to the hut; there is no potable water at the warming hut, but water and firewood can be obtained at Big Springs Campground about 2.5 miles away. Camping opportunities at this location are limited: there is a single campsite on site that can handle both an RV and tents. Specifics on fees, reservation rules and seasonal availability are not provided here, so plan to check the Caribou-Targhee National Forest website or contact the nearest ranger station or Macks Inn for up-to-date information, and bear in mind that the area supports a wide range of outdoor activities year-round from boating and fishing to winter sports and wildlife viewing.
