“Clean campground I’ve been to many times and usually enjoy. The host this year was just rude multiple times and ruined the entire experience. Will probably not be back. ”
“Nice level long campsites. Shady, limited cellular. Camp host keeps things clean, but is very bear aware, so very anxious about materials outside your camper. As others have mentioned, road noise is significant.”
“Stinky bathrooms, bad but other than that, a nice place to stay.”

HIGHWAY 20

Flat Rock Campground sits along U.S. Highway 20 at about 6,400 feet in Island Park, roughly 22 miles south of West Yellowstone, Montana and 30 miles north of Ashton, Idaho. The campground lies next to the Henry's Fork of the Snake River, with a mix of lodgepole pine and open meadows that open onto river views from some sites; the surrounding landscape is shaped by the Henry's Fork and Island Park calderas, so expect stands of pines, summer wildflowers in the meadows and frequent wildlife sightings everything from waterfowl and bald eagles to moose, elk and, in the broader area, both black and grizzly bears. Flat Rock is an excellent base for river-based recreation: the Henry's Fork is known for fly-fishing for rainbow and brook trout, Big Springs (one of the nation's largest springs) is just 4.5 miles upstream, and the Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail provides a lazy three-hour float that finishes near Macks Inn. Tubing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting are common on the river, while Island Park Reservoir, Henry's Lake and nearby trail systems (including the Coffee Pot Rapids Trail, and regional routes that connect to the Continental Divide and Nez Perce Trails) expand options for hiking, biking, horseback riding, OHV travel and wildlife viewing. The broader Caribou-Targhee National Forest also supports winter sports, hunting, picnicking and overnight stays in historic cabins or lookouts in season. The campground itself is small and straightforward: there are exactly 16 campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, with a mix of single and double sites and a handful that include 50-amp electric hookups. Each site has a picnic table, a utility table, a tent pad and a campfire ring; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, and all interior roads and parking spurs are gravel. The highway-side location means easy access for trailers and day trips, and Macks Inn just across the highway and a quarter-mile north of the campground entrance provides practical services such as boat rentals, shuttle service, showers, laundry, gasoline and groceries. Because fees, reservation rules and seasonal openings can change, plan ahead by checking current conditions and permits with the Caribou-Targhee National Forest or the official recreation reservation site before you arrive; also be prepared for variable mountain weather and occasional road or trail closures that affect access.
