McCrea Bridge Campground sits at about 6,200 feet on the backwaters of Island Park Reservoir and offers a compact, straightforward camping experience for anglers and waterside recreationists. The site contains 16 campsites, each set up to accommodate both tents and RVs, and every campsite comes with a picnic table, campfire ring and grill; note that a few sites have stairs between the parking spur and the level of the site pad. Basic services include vault toilets, drinking water, a trash collection area and a boat ramp right in the campground, while interior roads and parking spurs are gravel even though a paved road leads to the entrance. There is no electrical hook-up at sites; firewood can be purchased from the host. The campground sits in a lodgepole pine forest so some sites are shaded while others are open and sunny, and because the reservoir is used for irrigation the waterline drops through the summer by August the reservoir is often no longer accessible from McCrea Bridge. Recreation here centers on the water and on nearby trail systems. Island Park Reservoir supports boating, water skiing, canoeing and fishing (a boat ramp in-camp makes launching easy when water levels permit), while the larger Island Park and Henry's Fork area is famous for fly-fishing anglers pursue rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout as well as Kokanee salmon, and the Henry's Fork is widely regarded among fly-fishing destinations. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders and ATV users will find many miles of trails in the area, including connections to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and sections of the Nez Perce Trail; the Big Springs National Recreation Water Trail offers roughly a three-hour float with frequent wildlife sightings (moose, bald eagles and Sandhill cranes among them). For nearby side trips, Mesa Falls Scenic Byway and its Upper and Lower Mesa Falls are about 12 miles south, Harriman State Park sits roughly 14 miles to the south with more trails and fishing on the Henry's Fork, Henry's Lake State Park is about 16 miles north, and the west entrance to Yellowstone (West Yellowstone, MT) is roughly 29 miles away. Fees, reservation windows and seasonal opening dates are not specified here, so check the Caribou-Targhee National Forest pages or recreation.gov before you go.
