“Very nice campground. Clean and quiet. Only suggestion is that some of the spots are difficult to get into because the trees are so close to the pad. Would help if a few of them were taken out. The back-in spots are much easier for bigger trailers. We will be coming back!”
“It was quiet and woody. May back someday!”

Buffalo Campground sits at about 6,200 feet on the banks of the Buffalo River, a spring-fed tributary that joins the Henry's Fork just a couple of miles east. The surrounding Island Park landscape is defined by ancient volcanic calderas, dense stands of lodgepole pine, broad grassy meadows that bloom with summer wildflowers, and abundant wildlife from moose and elk to black and grizzly bears, bald eagles and Sandhill cranes. The campground itself puts you close to water: brook and rainbow trout swim the Buffalo River within easy casting distance, while world-class fly-fishing on the Henry's Fork, boating and skiing on Island Park Reservoir and Henry's Lake, and the three-hour Big Springs float are all short drives away. Trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and OHV use, plus historic routes such as the Continental Divide and Nez Perce trails, open up the greater Caribou-Targhee National Forest for exploration; Mesa Falls, Harriman State Park and the West Yellowstone entrance to Yellowstone National Park are convenient day-trip destinations. On the practical side, Buffalo offers 49 sites in total, and every one of them is equipped to handle both RVs and tents, with many of the sites available by reservation; there is also a large group site that can accommodate up to 150 people. The campground's paved loops include one loop with electrical hookups, and visitors will find accessible vault toilets, potable drinking water and trash collection on site, plus a separate parking area at the accessible fishing dock and viewing platforms on the east end of the campground. Ponds Lodge sits across Highway 20 with fuel, groceries and basic supplies, and the campground entrance is located just north of the lodge on the east side of Highway 20 between West Yellowstone (about 26 miles to the north) and Ashton, Idaho (about 25 miles to the south). For up-to-date information on fees, seasonal openings and reservations, check the Forest Service recreation information or the reservation system before you go.
