“Always clean! Great views! Cell phone coverage is weak so if that is important, find a location within the park where the cell towers can be reached. Some spots are not level (but most are) so read reviews on this! ”
“very clean park. Was a peaceful escape from work. The other campers were very respectful and the volunteers very helpful. Definitely going back again and again. ”

Sugar Bottom Campground sits on the east shore of Coralville Lake in the Iowa River Valley, a heavily wooded mix of hardwoods that shades campsites and frames views across the water a few miles north of Iowa City. The campground offers a total of 235 sites: 221 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 14 walk-to tent sites for primitive camping. Site types range from full hook-up locations and 50-amp electric-and-water pads to standard 30-amp electric sites and non-electric tent spots. Practical facilities are concentrated and well maintained modern restrooms with showers, vault toilets, a dump station, drinking water, and an entrance station are on site and the campground provides a sandy beach and a boat ramp for direct access to Coralville Lake. A barrier-free asphalt trail runs through the area for easier mobility, and wildlife is abundant in the surrounding forest: whitetail deer, turkey, pheasants, waterfowl and a variety of songbirds are regular sightings. Recreation at Sugar Bottom emphasizes water and trail activities: anglers and boaters launch from the campground to fish Coralville Lake and the Iowa River for largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and catfish, while swimmers use the sheltered beach and paddlers and powerboaters take advantage of the wide lake. Trails are a major draw the Cedar Valley Nature Trail passes nearby and the Sugar Bottom Mountain Bike Trail system in the day-use area offers runs for beginners through experts; the Sugar Bottom Disc Golf Course (18 holes) sits in the day-use area as well. Beyond the campground boundaries the broader Coralville Lake project supports additional recreation and services picnic areas with group shelters, an accessible fishing pier, hunting opportunities, environmental education, and other concessions and nearby points of interest include the Devonian Fossil Gorge about 10 miles below the dam and the cultural and service centers of Iowa City, Coralville and Cedar Rapids. For reservation procedures, seasonal dates and fees, campers should consult the park's official site or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers page before planning a stay.
