About

Sandy Beach Campground sits on the northern shore of Coralville Lake in the Iowa River Valley, just north of Iowa City and easily reached from I-380 near Shueyville or from Highway 1 near Solon. The campground contains 58 sites in total: 50 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 8 tent-only walk-to sites. Among the RV-capable spaces you'll find a mix of full hook-up and standard electric sites; the tent areas include non-electric walk-to pitches for a quieter, more primitive feel. Practical amenities at Sandy Beach are straightforward and family-friendly modern restrooms and showers, a playground, drinking water, an on-site dump station and an entrance station and the adjacent Sandy Beach Day Use Area provides picnic tables, a large group picnic shelter, a boat ramp, fish-cleaning station, vault restrooms and direct lake access for launching or shore fishing. Sandy Beach is part of the larger Coralville Lake project, which supports a broad slate of outdoor pursuits: boating, lake and river fishing, hiking and mountain biking, wildlife viewing and environmental education, plus historic and cultural sites nearby. Anglers will be interested in catches such as largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and catfish; the lake project also includes accessible fishing facilities and multiple boat ramps beyond the Sandy Beach day area. The campground sits among mixed hardwood forest where white-tailed deer, turkeys, pheasants, waterfowl and many songbirds are commonly seen, and it's a convenient base for visiting the Devonian Fossil Gorge below the dam, local golf courses, the University of Iowa/Coralville amenities, and cultural sites in Cedar Rapids, West Branch and the Amana Colonies. Fees, reservation policies and seasonal dates are set by the managing agency, so check the official Coralville Lake or US Army Corps of Engineers information before you go to confirm availability and make reservations.
