“This location has fishing. They PVC tubes for recycling fishing line. However, all of them are full and need to be emptied. Otherwise things are good.”

Perched on the west bank of the Iowa River immediately below the Coralville Lake dam, Tailwater West Campground sits inside the dam complex amid a heavily wooded stand of mixed hardwoods. The loop is small and practical: there are 22 campsites in all, with 20 sites sized to accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 walk-in tent-only sites. Site types include a mix of full hook-up RV sites, standard electric sites, and non-electric walk-to tent campsites, and the campground backs onto river and forest habitat where deer, turkeys, waterfowl and songbirds are commonly seen. Onsite facilities are straightforward and useful for extended stays a modern restroom with showers, a fish-cleaning station, and nearby potable water and a dump station (located just outside the West Overlook Campground). The Tailwater Day Use Area, adjacent to the camping loop, provides a playground, a hiking trail and ADA-accessible fishing piers, and the campground fee booth is handled through the West Overlook Campground. Beyond the loop, the wider Coralville Lake project opens up a wide range of recreation: anglers can target largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and catfish in both river and lake waters, and boat ramps and lake boating facilities are available elsewhere around the reservoir. Several trails thread the dam complex Squire Point, Woodpecker Trail, the Tailwater Riverwalk and the barrier-free Veterans Trail and the nearby Devonian Fossil Gorge exposes a 375-million-year-old sea floor with twenty discovery points and a cell-phone audio tour for self-guided exploration. The Turkey Creek Disc Golf Course offers nine varied holes through partial woods and open stretches, and the park as a whole supports biking, swimming, picnicking with group shelters, wildlife viewing and more. Tailwater West is a compact, well-situated base for anglers, families and trail users who want close river access and basic service amenities; for current fees, reservation rules and seasonal information, contact the Coralville Lake project office or the managing agency before you go.
