“Nice campground just outside of Iowa City. Perfect for attending a Hawkeyes football game. Just electric hookups on the east side. Nice flat camping spots most backed up to the water. Very lovely!”
“The facilities were very clean, the scenery was beautiful, and it was a great spot to gather around a campfire with family. ”
“We always love coming to this campground. The bathrooms and showers are clean and the campsite always seems level and with a great setting. Camping here is effortless. We will be back again and again!”

Tailwater East Campground sits on the east bank of the Iowa River just below the Coralville Lake Dam, inside the dam complex a short drive north of Iowa City. The campground contains 22 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents; park materials note a mix of full-hookup, standard electric and walk-to tent options, so confirm the exact site type when you reserve. On-site conveniences include a modern restroom and shower building, a fish-cleaning station and a boat ramp that puts you directly onto the Iowa River below the dam. Fees are collected at the park fee booth in the nearby West Overlook Campground, so check the Corps of Engineers website or call the managing office for current rates, reservation rules and seasonal availability before you head out. Recreation at Tailwater East ties you into the larger Coralville Lake project: anglers have easy river access for largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, walleye and catfish, while boaters and swimmers use the lake and river for water sports and water-skiing. Several trails thread the dam complex Squire Point, Woodpecker Trail, the Tailwater Riverwalk and the barrier-free Veterans Trail and the Devonian Fossil Gorge directly below the dam reveals a 375-million-year-old sea floor with 20 numbered discovery points and a cell-phone audio tour. The Turkey Creek Disc Golf Course provides nine varied holes, and elsewhere in the project you'll find an accessible fishing pier, picnic shelters, playgrounds and opportunities for mountain biking, hunting and wildlife viewing. If you want a town break, Iowa City/Coralville amenities and the University of Iowa are nearby, with cultural sites in Cedar Rapids and historic attractions such as the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Amana Colonies within easy driving distance.
