Angel of Shavano Group Campground sits at about 9,200 feet along the North Fork South Arkansas River in a mixed aspen-and-pine landscape where beaver ponds dot the valley floor and, in winter, snow on nearby Shavano Mountain famously forms an angel-like image. The site is a single group campsite the reservation system recognizes one group facility and is best suited to tent camping but can accommodate small RVs; it is rated to host up to 100 people and 12 14 vehicles, though parking is not available for large RVs. The Colorado Trail begins inside the campground, so hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers can step onto a route that extends 487 miles across Colorado with elevations from roughly 5,500 to 13,300 feet. The North Fork South Arkansas River runs right next to camp and supports rainbow and brook trout fishing, and simple in-camp recreation includes a volleyball court, baseball field and horseshoe pits (bring your own gear). The group site comes with a covered picnic shelter, picnic tables, six pedestal grills and a campfire circle with benches; vault toilets and trash collection are provided but no potable water is available at the group site (drinking water can be obtained at the nearby family campground). Reservations are required and may be made up to one year in advance; canceling a group overnight facility less than 14 days before arrival incurs a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee, and no-shows are assessed a $20 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's charges, taxes and add-ons. From Poncha Springs the campground is reached by heading west on U.S. 50 then a short turn onto County Road 240; if you continue about six miles beyond camp toward the North Fork reservoir expect an extremely rough, rocky road where high-clearance vehicles are recommended the reservoir sits near 11,000 feet and can bring rapidly changing weather. Finally, note that unmanned aircraft (drones) are regulated on these lands and must follow Forest Service rules, and refunds following a stay must be requested within seven days of your reservation's end.
